Ben Smith, EdTechInnovators

Come see how to tap into your students’ creative side. I will demonstrate, including student examples, how to enhance your classroom using technology. Science and technology form a natural bond that allows for the creation of a better learning environment for students and teachers.  Students in my science classes utilize technology as the tool for finding information, collecting data, analyzing data, and communicating their learning. Students use a wide variety of software and hardware to accomplish the regular tasks assigned in class. Over the course of a school year, students develop the ability to identify and utilize technology in the normal course of their work.

We will identify and discuss ways to categorize the use of technology as a blueprint for integrating its use into the regular classroom.  We will then share sample projects including the exemplary work of students. These projects focus not only on science but also the technology standards set forth by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE).  You will also discover a list of ways for participants to find ideas for their specific curriculum.

Emerging Technologies in Science

Ben Smith, EdTechInnovators

"The world is changing as technology changes the nature of the “community” in which we live.  Students already use technology that brings us closer such as chat rooms, iPods (MP3 players), and digital media.  Using Web 2.0 tools is a natural next step.  Today’s students use FaceBook for social connections.  Web 2.0 tools allow for social interaction to be integrated into the curriculum in meaningful ways.  This session will identify many of these technologies and demonstrate ways to effectively make use of these technologies in the science classroom.

Web 2.0 tools provide many opportunities to transform the digital learning environment by providing students with the ability to make social connections in completing their assignments. This session will explore how to use the latest Web 2.0 tools available such as Google Docs, Diigo, VoiceThread and more."

More Than Just Probes – Breaking the Traditional Mold of a Lab Report

MNPS_MoreThanProbes.pdf

Ben Smith, EdTechInnovators

Probes are a great way for students to collect data.  What happens next?  We use a variety of digital tools to enhance lab reports and student projects.  Come see how to change the face of the traditional lab report. Traditional lab reports consist of typed or hand-written documentation of data, results and analysis of laboratory investigations. Participants will learn how to use emergent technologies with students that make laboratory analysis and delivery of results more meaningful through enhancing their communication skills and working collaboratively with their peers.  Participants will learn how to use PowerPoint, Inspiration, iMovie, and Notebook to create digital laboratory write-ups for their science classrooms.  We will show participants how to tie their content, curriculum and technology together in meaningful ways that allow them to address both science standards and technology standards. We will then share sample projects including the exemplary work of students. These projects focus not only on science but also the technology standards set forth by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE).  We will also provide a list of ways for participants to find ideas for their specific curriculum.

Digitizing the Classroom – Prepare Students for the Global Society

MNPS_Digitizing.pdf

Ben Smith, EdTechInnovators

Today’s students are innovative and understand how to communicate and collaborate in their personal lives.  This session will show you how to capitalize on these characteristics and bring your classroom into the 21st century putting your curriculum into students’ hands the way they live their lives.  As we think about the normal activities that a teacher engages in, each of these can be put into a digital format.  From podcasting to pdfs we will explore how to digitize your curriculum.  In doing so, you continue to create a classroom that allows students to work in an authentic 21st century environment.  Students already have the toys, come see how to put them to use to help them learn.
